HERITAGE VALUE
Found to be one of the most cultivated fruits in the world, the orange originated in Northeast India. Widely grown in tropical and subtropical countries, it is an evergreen flowering tree. It is not a wild tree but rather a domesticated cross between a mandarin orange and hybrid pomelo.
In case you are wondering, the fruit got named before the colour! It was around 1300, that there is the first mention of the name orange in English, which was derived from the old French word ‘orange’, adapted from the Arabic ‘naranj’, from Persian ‘narang’ and originally from Sanskrit ‘naranga’.
